oracy
We understand that speaking and listening are at the heart of communication and thus children’s ability to engage with others. Children do not become effective speakers and listeners by accident and thus the direct teaching of effective speaking and listening skills are embedded in our school right across the curriculum.
Our teachers have a toolbox of specific oracy focussed teaching techniques which encourage oracy development as part of normal classroom practice. As well as this we have a planned programme of oracy progression specifically designed to ensure children develop the necessary skills to be able to communicate effectively with a wide range of audiences by the time they leave Y6.
As part of our oracy progression we use the Mighty Oak public speaking programme where children are taught how to articulate, speak confidently and give a speech. We take part in local schools public speaking festival and all Junior children take part in our annual public speaking competition, the Moktar Cup. Independently all children write and present a speech on a topic of their choice until we have twelve finalists and you can see this year's winners below!
